Teenage Girl Awakens in Coffin in Guatemala

A community in Guatemala was left in disbelief when a fifteen-year-old girl, Yuleidy Ixcotoyac, reportedly thought to be dead, woke up inside her own coffin.

The incident occurred while she was in a car with her father, Pastor Abraham Ixcotoyac, who was taking her to the hospital due to chest pains she had been experiencing. After she passed out, he checked for her pulse and breathing but couldn’t sense any signs of life. Believing she had died, he chose to forgo the trip to the hospital. Remarkably, her family had not received a confirmed diagnosis or death certificate, yet they proceeded with her funeral about eight hours later.

In Guatemala, quick burials are customary, and her family bought a coffin and placed her inside it. However, things took an extraordinary turn at their home in El Jocote when her mother, while grieving by the casket, noticed movement. She insisted that Yuleidy was alive, contrary to everyone’s belief.

“When I was crying on top of her casket, we opened the window, and she was moving, she was waking up, and suddenly she sat up,” the mother recounted.

Video footage showed the shocking moment as Yuleidy sat up with friends and family surrounding her, where someone was seen holding a cup to her mouth while others celebrated, yelling “Hallelujah!”

Now recovering at home, Yuleidy described her experience: “My heart started hurting really badly, it felt heavy and then I blacked out, like I fainted,” she explained to reporters.

Reactions on social media varied, with users sharing humorous takes on the situation. One stated, “And that is why it is called a ‘Wake,’” while another remarked, “There are a few steps missing here before the wake? lol.”

The term “wake” refers to a traditional practice in which mourners stay awake to watch over a deceased person’s body before burial. The practice aims to protect the body from evil spirits, rooted in ancient customs.

Following the incident, the teenager expressed her gratitude, stating she “thanks God” for her life.
