An Oklahoma teenager shared a video Tuesday claiming to be the first person to win the classic video game “Tetris.”
Willis Gibson, 13, who goes by the name “Blue Scuti” on YouTube, was able to reach level 157 of the iconic video game, only to have his entire system crash and shut down. (released in video) share Go to his page. The video is interesting to watch as it shows Gibson getting into the fight for just 38 minutes before winning it.
For those who live in caves, Tetris is a highly addictive game in which players flip blocks of different shapes to form perfect rows. Each complete line disappears as soon as it is completed, leaving space for more blocks to fall. As the game progresses, more and more blocks will fall.
The objective is to continue playing the game until the screen is filled with blocks and you lose. Otherwise you could end up like this kid and literally ruin your game completely.
Apparently a lot of people thought the game was only up to level 29. according to To the BBC. But in 2010, a gamer named Thor Aackerlund reached level 30 using a technique called “hypertapping,” which involved vibrating his fingers on a controller. Until Gibson's alleged victory, only artificial intelligence could reach the kill screen. (Related: Dear Kay: I lost my tech job because of… robots. Help!)
The BBC noted that Gibson not only won the game, but also broke the overall score record and three other Tetris world records. It remains to be seen how long his reign will last.
Tetris was created by Soviet engineer Alexei Pajitnov in 1984 and released by Nintendo in 1989.
