A high school student who lived in a car in Richmond, Virginia, graduated with several full college scholarships.
Max Jones, 19, attended George Weiss High School while spending months living in his car and working at a local restaurant, as reported by Atlanta News First.
“I’ve gone through a lot,” he shared. “I’ve been homeless for quite some time.”
He added, “I was wearing the same clothes all the time. They weren’t clean, but not really dirty either—just the same, like sweatpants and shirts.”
Jones attributed his homelessness to a troubled upbringing. As a senior, he lived with his half-brother and mother, but things took a turn for the worse when the father of his half-brothers reentered their lives, causing further strain on his family.
Ultimately, he knew something had to change. “I realized my situation was bad, so I took the bus and paid for my ticket,” he recounted.
After finishing at George Weiss, Jones struggled but managed to save enough for a car to live in, although he mentioned the difficulties: “I can’t take a shower… can’t eat.”
Teachers and mentors often tried to assist him, offering food or occasionally covering his hotel stays when possible.
When Rev. Robert Winfrey from the Newlife Rescue Tabernacle visited his school, things changed for Jones. “I wanted to ensure he wasn’t completely overwhelmed by his situation,” Winfrey said.
After meeting, Winfrey offered Jones a place to stay in a church cottage until graduation, where he had access to food, a clean bathroom, and a safe sleeping environment. “All he needed was that little push, and I’ve been thankful for that,” Winfrey reflected.
With community support, Jones navigated the graduation process and secured full scholarships to Virginia Union University, Richmond, Ohio, and Payne College in Augusta, Georgia.
“Maybe I’m not fully aware of what I’m saying right now, but I’m trying to change the world,” he expressed.
