Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was arrested at Paris airport in connection with a preliminary police investigation.

Durov was reportedly arrested by French police on Saturday following an investigation into his company’s messaging app.

Authorities believe Telegram does not have enough moderators to curb criminal activity.

The French-Russian tech billionaire was detained and is due to appear in court, the people said. AFP News agency.

French investigators had issued an arrest warrant for Durov as part of an investigation into allegations of fraud, drug trafficking, organized crime, promoting terrorism and cyberbullying.

Durov was stopped upon landing in Paris on Saturday night after arriving on a private jet from Baku, and is accused of not doing enough to stop the illegal use of his platform.

“We’ve had enough of Telegram’s impunity,” said one investigator, who expressed shock that Durov had flown to Paris knowing he was wanted.

Many influential people responded to Duvall’s arrest.

Elon Musk re-shared the video of the interview using the hashtag “FreePavel,” in which Durov called Musk’s acquisition of X a “great development.” Durov then made a second post, asking, “Freedom! Freedom! Freedom?”

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also responded to the arrests, saying that “the need to protect free speech has never been more urgent.”
