WNBA Coach Sandy Brondello Suspended After Controversial Comments
Sandy Brondello, head coach of the Toronto Tempo, has been suspended for one game due to her remark referring to player Angel Reese as a “protected species.” In response, several officials and players in the WNBA stepped up to support her.
Among Brondello’s supporters is Temi Fagbenle, her center, who took to social media to express her views. Fagbenle mentioned, “’Protected species’ is just a figure of speech. Honestly, the suspension seems unwarranted,” adding that while the term “species” may carry unfortunate connotations in today’s racially charged climate, if the comment had been made about another player, Caitlin Clark, it wouldn’t have drawn outrage from her.
She concluded with, “This suspension is just ridiculous.”
Fagbenle elaborated on her statements the following day, suggesting that this controversy could spark meaningful dialogue about race relations in America. She emphasized that the phrase used by Brondello is a well-recognized expression within the sport.
Becky Hammon, head coach of the Las Vegas Aces, also came to Brondello’s defense. “When I saw her, I just hugged her really hard. I know her heart is in the right place,” Hammon shared, expressing her belief in Brondello’s character and resilience, especially amid the turmoil affecting the league. She hopes for a return to a sport that unifies people.
The controversy began during a game where Brondello’s comments were caught on the microphone, following a 111-92 loss to the Atlanta Dream. Reese responded on social media with a post that indicated her surprise over the comment, accompanied by a clown emoji.
Brondello later clarified that her words were not meant as a personal jab at Reese and explained that the expression is common in her homeland, Australia. Acknowledging the differing interpretations, she promised to avoid that phrase in the future and swiftly apologized to Reese.
On Sunday, Reese addressed the situation, stressing that intolerance has no place in the league and expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to move forward, refocusing her energy on basketball.
