Temporary Dystopia: Ex-Google Executive Cautions That AI Will Take Over Jobs at Every Level, Even for CEOs

AI’s Impact on the Job Market Predicted by Former Google Executive

Former chief business officer of Google X, Mo Gawdat, has issued a stark warning regarding the future of artificial intelligence in the job market. In a recent appearance on the CEO’s Diary Podcast, he expressed concerns about AI’s potential to displace jobs across various levels—not just entry-level positions, but also roles like software developers and even chief executives.

Gawdat emphasized that advancements in artificial general intelligence (AGI) could surpass human capabilities in many areas, including leadership roles. He cautioned that no one, even those in elite professions, should feel safe from the impending upheaval.

Describing the current era as a brief transition period called the “age of enhanced intelligence,” Gawdat stated that humanity is still working alongside AI systems. However, he foresees this eventually leading to “machine mastery,” where AI independently handles entire job functions, from administrative tasks to architecture.

He predicts a “short-term dystopia” by 2027, characterized by mass unemployment, social unrest, and a failure of the economic structure to adjust to new realities. “Unless you’re in the top 0.1%, you’re a farmer,” Gawdat warned, suggesting a future without a middle class.

Despite his bleak forecast, Gawdat is not against AI. He is actively involved in the creation of ethical AI systems that embody human values like compassion and connection. Yet, he remains troubled by the current AI development landscape, which he feels prioritizes profit over ethics.

Gawdat envisions an uplifting future powered by AI, suggesting it could allow people to break free from the constraints of an overly work-centric identity. “We couldn’t wake up every morning and occupy a 20-hour workday,” he remarked, challenging the notion that our purpose is centered only around work. He dreams of a society filled with joy, where free healthcare exists and people can spend more time with loved ones.
