Temporary Lifting of Some Sanctions to Permit Iranian Oil Already Available to Be Sold to Others

U.S. Considers Lifting Sanctions on Iranian Oil

During a CNN town hall, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Michael Walz, discussed the complexities surrounding Iranian oil. He mentioned that a significant amount of Iranian oil, including illicit sources, is already circulating in the market. Consequently, the U.S. plans to allow some of this oil to flow out.

Host Dana Bash inquired about the lifting of sanctions on 140 million barrels of Iranian oil, questioning why the U.S. would permit a nation at war to profit from oil sales, potentially funding its conflict against America. Walz clarified that the sanctions relief is somewhat misleading, as it pertains to oil already on ships and in storage. He emphasized that this action is intended to undermine Iran’s strategy to drive up global energy prices and inflict financial strain on consumers.

Bash pressed further, asking if the profits from these oil sales would bolster Iranian finances. Walz acknowledged that much of the oil in question is already integrated into the system, suggesting that it’s a tactical move not meant to enhance Iran’s financial capabilities significantly. He also mentioned that Iran utilizes temporary bases for countries like India and Japan as part of its broader strategy.

Walz noted that the current administration had lifted certain pressures initially placed by President Trump, who had enforced a strict “maximum pressure” approach during his time in office. The Iranian regime is reportedly facing challenges with its currency and foreign reserves, which has prompted concerns over control and funding. According to Walz, accusations against Trump regarding pressure on Iran (and even Russia) appear unfounded, considering the steps taken during his presidency.
