A 10-foot-long great white shark named Penny was captured lurking in waters off the coast of Florida.
Penny was tracked off the coast of Fort Myers Beach around 11 a.m. Sunday, March 17, according to oceanographic research agency OCEARCH.
The 10-foot, 3-inch great white shark first arrived off the coast of Boynton Beach, Florida, in December 2023. It then continued southwest into the Florida Keys and then into the Gulf of Mexico.
The 522-pound female shark went into hiding in the Sunshine State in the Florida Keys region on February 4th, then circled off Sanibel Island and was last heard on March 17th..

Almost a year ago, Penny became the 92nd great white shark to be tagged with OCEARCH in western North America.

She was named after a resident of Salty Penny Canvas, North Carolina. They assisted her OCEARCH with a custom marine canvas project that provides a comfortable experience on the water and allows operation in more extreme conditions.

Captain Chip Michallove, Owner of Outkast Sport Fishing south carolinatold Fox News Digital that this time of year, many great white sharks leave the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the southeastern United States and migrate northward to Nova Scotia.

“These are emotional days,” he said. “Their diet will completely change. They’ll go from chasing turtles and dolphins to looking for seals.”
