Upsets Mark Third Saturday in October Rivalry
The recent installment of the long-standing rivalry on the third Saturday in October featured some surprising outcomes within the Southeastern Conference.
In a dramatic turn of events, unranked Auburn seized the opportunity after a late fumble from Georgia, ultimately kicking a game-winning field goal just as time expired. This victory over the top-ranked Bulldogs is noteworthy, particularly as it marks the second week in a row that the nation’s No. 1 team has fallen—Oklahoma had previously defeated then-top ranked Texas just the week before.
In another noteworthy result, Tennessee, with only one loss this season, claimed a 26-10 victory against No. 6 Alabama shortly after Auburn’s thrilling win.
Tennessee’s DeSean Bishop had an impressive performance, rushing for 159 yards and scoring two touchdowns. This allowed the Volunteers to hand Alabama its second consecutive loss, a rare occurrence for the Crimson Tide, who last lost back-to-back regular season games in 2007. Tennessee’s solid defense and quarterback George MacIntyre’s steady play contributed significantly to their success, especially as Alabama managed just 201 total yards of offense, including a mere 54 rushing yards, while also committing four turnovers.
Alabama entered Neyland Stadium without its leading receiver, Ryan Coleman-Williams, who had recently undergone knee surgery. Crimson Tide quarterback Keelon Russell managed to throw for 147 yards but could only score the team’s lone touchdown with a 19-yard run. The match was riddled with errors for Alabama, as they lost two fumbles and Russell also threw two interceptions.
Going into halftime, Tennessee held a slim lead of 12-10; both teams faced difficulties moving the ball, evidenced by a collective five turnovers and only 3 of 17 third-down conversions completed.
