Illegal Immigrant Charged with Rape and Kidnapping

Juan Arevalo Mendez, an undocumented immigrant with a history of deportation, now faces serious charges of rape and kidnapping in Fairfax County, Virginia. Former Acting ICE Director Jonathan Fahey discussed Mendez’s extensive criminal background, which includes prior assaults and drug possession. He pointed out that these significant crimes might have been averted if local authorities had collaborated with ICE to keep Mendez in federal custody after his previous deportations.

In another case, Camilo Campos Hurtado, a Mexican national, received a 30-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to multiple charges linked to the sexual exploitation of minors. Campos Hurtado, who was working as a soccer coach in Franklin, Tennessee, admitted to drugging and assaulting children while he was in that role.

Federal prosecutors recommended a 50-year sentence during a July hearing after Campos Hurtado’s guilty plea. Acting Assistant Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Lauren Biss, stated that this individual will be deported immediately if released. She emphasized the importance of preventing him from harming any more children in the U.S.

The investigation began earlier this year when explicit content was found on a cellphone left at a business in Franklin. The tip led the Franklin Police Department to report the incident. Subsequent searches of Campos Hurtado’s home and car uncovered electronic devices containing child sexual abuse materials, as well as numerous false immigration and identification documents.

Although the offenses occurred between 2017 and 2021, federal prosecutors noted that forensic evidence indicated that Campos Hurtado had been producing such materials since at least 2013. It remains unclear when he first entered the United States illegally.
