NFL Playoffs to Start Amid Coaching Distractions
The NFL playoffs begin this weekend, and the Chargers and Rams are gearing up. However, they face some interesting distractions off the field.
On Friday morning, it was reported that the Tennessee Titans have asked to interview Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula and Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter.
We’re not quite sure when these interviews will happen, particularly since the Rams will be playing the Carolina Panthers on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. PT, followed by the Chargers facing the Patriots on Sunday at 5 p.m. PT. Per NFL rules, interviews are prohibited until after Wild Card Weekend.
Both Shula and Minter are regarded as promising young talents in defensive coaching circles. It’s likely just a matter of time before one of them lands a head coaching role. Minter has a brief stint of success at the collegiate level, while neither coach has yet had a head coaching opportunity in the NFL. He was interim head coach for Michigan’s first game of the 2023 season in a significant win against East Carolina.
At 39, Shula carries an impressive coaching background. His father, Dave, led the Cincinnati Bengals, and his uncle Mike has a long history of coaching at various levels. And let’s not forget his grandfather, Don, who holds the record for the most wins in NFL history. Quite the legacy to follow, right?
Since joining the Rams as an assistant linebacker coach in 2017, Shula’s contributions have been notable. He was crucial in the Rams’ Super Bowl victory four years ago, thanks to a strong defense featuring Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey. He stepped up as defensive coordinator in 2024.
This season, even while restructuring, Shula’s defense has thrived, ranking first for fewest rushing touchdowns allowed, fifth in turnovers forced, and tenth in points allowed.
Shula mentioned recently, “If we have the right conditions, we’ll make that decision,” referring to coaching opportunities. He added that he will stick to his game preparation routine, especially with a capable opponent ahead.
Minter’s journey has been impressive since he joined Jim Harbaugh at Michigan in 2022. Following a national title win in 2023, he moved to Southern California, becoming the Chargers’ defensive coordinator.
His influence has been significant; last season, the Chargers allowed the lowest passer rating in the NFL and ranked fifth in yards given up. They also made big plays frequently, finishing third in interceptions and eleventh in sacks.
Interestingly, as of Friday, Minter is seen as a strong candidate for the Ravens’ head coaching position. According to a New York-based prediction market, he has a 28% chance of landing the job, ahead of other contenders like Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores and Seahawks offensive coordinator Clint Kubiak.
