Tennessee Women’s Basketball Team Faces Setback

The Tennessee women’s basketball team had a strong performance last season, finishing with a record of 24-10 under first-year head coach Kim Caldwell. The Lady Vols kicked off the season with an impressive 13-game winning streak, driven by Caldwell’s energetic press-style strategy. They even managed to secure a victory against their rival UConn, reinforcing their strong capabilities, and made it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

However, there’s a concerning development for an essential player on the team.

Reports indicate that senior guard Ruby Whitehorn has been suspended indefinitely. She is one of the key players on the team, as noted by the Knoxville News Sentinel. Whitehorn was arrested on August 8, and she is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on September 5 in Knox County, facing felony charges related to domestic assault and robbery.

“Our investigation suggests that the allegations outlined in the warrant are not accurate and conflict with eyewitness accounts,” said Isaacs in a statement to the Associated Press. “Ruby Whitehorn is eager to see this matter resolved soon.”

Details from police reports reveal that the 21-year-old Whitehorn had a physical confrontation with a woman outside her home. The alleged victim claims that Whitehorn kicked her door, pursued her inside, and broke a glass mirror, though police reported that no injuries were found. According to the report, Whitehorn explained that she had entered the residence to retrieve her phone and passport after an unknown woman led her there.

Whitehorn, a six-foot guard from Detroit, Michigan, is in her senior year of college basketball. She began her journey at Clemson, where she was recognized for her talents by making the All-ACC Freshman Team in 2023, starting 62 out of 66 games.

In her last season with Tennessee, Whitehorn achieved career highs in scoring and free-throw percentage while minimizing turnovers. She averaged 11.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game, with a shooting percentage of 46.3. Her contributions were significant, as she ranked third on the team in rebounds and fourth in overall scoring.

ESPN had placed Whitehorn among the top 15 recruits of the 2022 class. In addition to receiving the Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year award, she also participated in both the McDonald’s and Jordan brand events.
