Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has slammed a male journalist who called her a “transphobe” in connection with her stand against biological men who identify as women being allowed into women’s sports.
It all started with a report on Friday. X Author Mitchell Northam reported on the vandalism of the “Take Back Title IX” tour bus following the Chapel Hill event. Northam reported that eggs were thrown at the bus and messages were written on it, one of which read, “Transphobic bastards.”
“Go on now. I hope to see your nasty self at Wimbledon – if you’re there.”
So another writer, Ben Rosenberg, stepped in. Torn Tennis great: “It’s still mind-blowing how in recent years Martina Navratilova has turned this anti-trans activism into a life obsession! And she’s been mean, cruel and dehumanising, not just discussing fairness in sport, but escalating it into a transphobic tirade, as I’ve covered before. Boo.”
Navratilova heard Rothenberg’s criticism and I gave back.: “Yet another man telling a woman what to care about. Who the hell are you? Oh yeah, the reporter who tells a tennis player: informal And I’ll print what they said anyway. Good to know you care about women’s sports and women’s sex spaces. I do.”
Rothenberg Replied Navratilova disputed her claims, saying: “I did nothing of that nature. But I am also concerned that someone who has been a beacon of freedom and inclusion in the sport I cover has unfortunately chosen to undermine the platform she built with a cyberbullying campaign aimed at an unknown, low-level amateur athlete. I expect you to be better.”
Not to be outdone, Navratilova Dropped something big On Rosenberg: “Cyberbullying — awful. I’ll block you for goodness sake. And just to let you know, I do more than just tweet. Go away. I hope to see your nastiness at Wimbledon — if you’re there.”
Rothenberg It wasn’t overor: “(As these people flocked to my mentions, I was surprised to see that for many of them, this issue has become their entire personality on this website. Scavenging through the most obscure amateur sporting events for examples to combat this transgender boogeyman has become an obsession, a lifestyle.)”
As of Monday afternoon, Rosenberg’s first post on X had 630 likes and nearly 1,000 comments, an outlier in terms of ratios.
In 2019, after Navratilova wrote an op-ed saying it was “insane and unfair” for transgender women to compete against biological women, Athlete Ally, an advocacy group for LGBTQ athletes, removed her from its advisory board for making “transphobic” remarks.
