Tennis Stars Share Views on Representing the U.S.
American tennis player Amanda Anisimova recently addressed a question from a reporter about what it feels like to represent the U.S. in light of current events. During the Australian Open, she responded to how it felt to “play under the American flag right now,” stating she takes pride in her nationality.
“I was born in America, so I’m always proud to represent my country,” remarked Anisimova, who hails from New Jersey. “Many of us are doing really well, and it’s encouraging to see such talented athletes on both the men’s and women’s sides. I think we are all doing an excellent job of showcasing ourselves.”
The interviewer pushed for more clarification, asking if the current situation in the U.S. complicated her feelings. Anisimova replied, “I don’t think that matters.”
This sentiment contrasted sharply with Coco Gauff’s comments made earlier in the week. Gauff had addressed concerns regarding the “current state of the United States,” a year after President Trump’s second term began.
“I hope that our country becomes more peaceful, and that we can be kinder when discussing different topics,” Gauff expressed. “I’ve spoken out about my views quite a bit, and honestly, I’m a bit weary of addressing it at the moment, especially as a Black woman experiencing challenges, both offline and online. I see marginalized communities facing significant issues, and all I can do is donate and use my voice.” She added that she hopes, moving forward, the country makes progress toward a better future.
