Australian tennis player Destany Aiava revealed on Saturday that the upcoming 2026 season will mark her final year in the sport, sharing a candid and critical statement on her social media. Aiava, who is 25, compared tennis to a “toxic boyfriend,” reflecting on her youth when she started her career at just 17.
In her Instagram post, Aiava acknowledged the positive aspects of tennis, mentioning the friends she’s made and the places she’s traveled to, which were once just dreams. However, she expressed that the sport has also taken a toll on her personal life, impacting her relationship with her body, family, and self-esteem.
She addressed the tennis community directly, stating, “To everyone who has ever made me uncomfortable, I want to say hello to you.” She also criticized those who have harassed her online, expressing frustration with the culture surrounding the sport, describing it as racist, misogynistic, and hostile to those who don’t fit the traditional mold.
Aiava emphasized that life should not be spent in misery or with half-hearted efforts. “My ultimate goal is to wake up every day and say I absolutely love what I do,” she noted, admitting that while the thought of starting over at 25 is intimidating, it seems better than continuing in a space where she feels out of place.
In conclusion, she expressed appreciation for those who have supported her throughout her journey, reflecting on her time in the sport.
With 10 titles from the International Tennis Federation, Aiava has a singles match record of 269 wins to 178 losses. Notably, she has yet to advance beyond the second round in any Grand Slam, including the 2025 Australian Open.
