Two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza married her model girlfriend just over three years after a former fan approached the tennis star on a New York street for a selfie.
Former world number one Muguruza and her new husband Arthur Borges said their “I do” in an intimate ceremony in Marbella, Spain, on October 5.
The retired tennis star wore an elegant Mikado A-line dress designed by Pronovias with an asymmetrical neckline, crystal-trimmed collar and six-foot train, with a large white bow on the left shoulder. It is said that Instagram post about her special day.
For the reception, Muguruza wore a flapper-inspired strapless column dress with crystal fringe and floral embroidery, also created by Pronovias.
Borges wore a navy tuxedo with a matching bow tie and cummerbund.
The two met during the 2021 U.S. Open, but not under the lights of the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, but under the peaceful atmosphere of Central Park.
Muguruza was in Manhattan for the tournament and needed some fresh air and a reset from the hustle and bustle of the American Majors.
“My hotel is near Central Park and I was bored, so I thought I'd go for a walk,” the tennis star said in 2023. According to The Sun.
“I went outside and I met him on the street. All of a sudden he turned around and said, 'Good luck at the U.S. Open.' I thought, “Wow, he's so handsome.” ”
The two took pictures and went their separate ways that day, but continued to meet regularly at the park.
Muguruza described his chance encounter with the businessman as something out of a romantic movie.
“This is a complete movie,” she said in Spanish Outlet Ora! “Even before he asked me out, I knew I would marry him. When we met, it was love at first sight, and we immediately realized we were the ideal couple. I did.”
The two announced their engagement in May 2023, with Burgess popping the big question through a joint Instagram post.
The post was captioned, “You called me 'hello,'” and geotagged the dreamy proposal from Marbella, Spain.
The couple have previously spoken about how important the southern Spanish city is to them.
“Next year we want to hold it in the summer, near the beach and in Spain, because this is the place that unites us the most,” Muguruza told Hola!
Muguruza, from Venezuela, won the French Open in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2017.
She announced that she will officially retire from tennis in April 2024.
