Tennis Star Yoshihito Nishioka Collapses During First Round at U.S. Open

Japanese tennis star Yoshihito Nishioka was forced to withdraw from the US Open on Monday after collapsing in his first-round match against Miomir Kecmanovic.

During the fifth set of the match in New York, Nishioka was seen walking to the back of the court in obvious pain and then collapsing to the ground.

Medical staff quickly arrived and Kecmanovic walked over to Nishioka and sat next to him while treating the fallen player.

Nishioka later told fans that he had been feeling unwell even before taking to the court that day.

“Thank you so much for your support,” he wrote to X in his native language. “I already had cramps in my legs at 3-3 in the fourth set, and I was close to having a cramp when I was serving at 5-4. In the final, my hips were more cramped than my legs, and I couldn't stand up, and then my legs cramped too. I had repeated cramps in my shoulder blades, hips, sides and thighs.”

“I started to have difficulty breathing, but with the help of my team I was able to get into a wheelchair and they carried me despite the convulsions. The convulsions didn't stop for about an hour but have subsided now. My body is in a lot of pain so I'm going to stop playing doubles and return to Japan.”

“I'm disappointed that the match ended so badly, as I had a good chance of winning. However, I have risen in the rankings and had many confident moments during this US (hard court) season, so I will do my best in the Asian season,” Nishioka wrote. “First of all, I look forward to seeing you all at the Davis Cup.”

Nishioka, wearing pink shorts and standing at the edge of the court, first leaned on her racket, then slumped to her left, off the court and collapsed against the wall.
