Golf legend Phil Mickelson has reacted to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s call for stricter gun control following the Bondi Beach shooting, noting that the attackers seem to have shown a disregard for the existing gun laws.
Mickelson mentioned, “In fact, the shooting went on for quite a while because no one else had a gun to intervene.”
He added, “I’m not a gun enthusiast, but I think it’s pretty naïve to buy into what he’s selling,” referring to Albanese’s comments about potentially tightening gun regulations in Australia.
Reports suggest that Albanese is advocating for significant changes to the country’s gun laws in the aftermath of the Bondi Beach incident. However, these new measures would primarily target law-abiding citizens rather than the perpetrators of the attack.
The Australian government is looking into options like limiting the number of guns an individual can own and barring non-citizens from gun ownership.
Albanese has also proposed the possibility of imposing expiration dates on gun licenses to ensure that owners have not “radicalized.”
Other proposed gun control measures include expediting the creation of a national firearms registry and banning items related to 3D printing and accessories with high ammunition capacities.
Despite having some of the world’s most stringent gun laws, Mickelson emphasizes that such restrictions do little to stop determined terrorists from committing violent acts.
