Former ABC News reporter Terry Moran has come to the defense of social media, which has criticized President Trump as promoting “hate.” He expressed regret over the situation, saying, “It’s intense. I wish there were a more positive narrative. It was tough for me to articulate, but I aimed to use strong language because he certainly provoked it. You know, he constantly attacks our discussions, lowers the tone of public discourse, and weaponizes his position.” Moran shared these thoughts during an appearance on a podcast.
He highlighted what he perceives as Trump’s capacity to “divide us with that venom,” deeming the experience “invasive.”
In an interview aired on Monday, Moran elaborated about his late-night reflections, mentioning that he felt it was a regular family night that prompted his thoughts about the state of affairs.
“I went to bed wondering about it all. Then, I wrote it down, looked at it, and thought, ‘That’s true.’ So, I hit send,” he recalled.
Last week, ABC News informed Moran that they would not be renewing his contract due to his controversial comments, which both Trump and top adviser Stephen Miller labeled as “hate.”
In a now-deleted tweet, Moran remarked that Miller “thrives on hatred,” commenting on how the president’s animosity serves only to elevate his own stature, equating it to his “spiritual nourishment.”
ABC acknowledged that Moran, who had been with the network for over two decades, breached their social media policies with his remarks.
Following the incident, the White House pressured ABC for several days to take action against Moran, celebrating his departure after communications director Stephen Chang’s announcement.
Recently, Moran announced plans to start a new media project on Substack, aiming to connect with a growing audience of followers after leaving mainstream media.
