Tesla's Brand Loyalty Drops, Showing That Progressives Dominate the EV Market

Tesla’s Declining Brand Loyalty Amid Musk’s Politics

Tesla, once a frontrunner in customer loyalty within the automotive sector, has experienced a significant drop in brand loyalty, particularly after CEO Elon Musk publicly aligned himself with conservative political values. This shift comes following Musk’s endorsement of President Donald Trump in July 2024, which seems to have impacted Tesla’s repeat customer rates negatively.

New insights from S&P Global Mobility indicate that Tesla’s customer loyalty, which soared to an impressive 73% in June 2024, has since dwindled. This figure was based on an analysis of vehicle registration data across all 50 states, reflecting that nearly three-quarters of Tesla owners were opting to purchase another Tesla vehicle.

However, this loyalty took a plunge shortly after Musk’s support for Trump was made public in July. His engagement with the Trump administration, specifically in areas like government efficiency, appears to have coincided with a decline in customer loyalty, which fell below the industry average to 49.9% by March 2025.

Although there was a slight recovery to 57.4% by May 2025, it’s still considerably lower than Tesla’s former industry-leading position. Currently, the company’s loyalty rates are somewhat competitive with those of domestic manufacturers like Chevrolet and Ford, but they still lag behind Toyota.

Experts are pointing to Musk’s increasing political involvement as a key factor that might be alienating many customers who were once drawn to Tesla’s environmentally friendly mission. Analyst Seth Goldstein from Morningstar noted that customers with more liberal inclinations are likely exploring alternatives to Tesla.

Interestingly, a recent study highlighted by Breitbart News suggests that left-leaning individuals show a marked decrease in interest in purchasing Tesla vehicles due to Musk’s political stance. According to research published in the journal Nature, this demographic has not only hesitated with Tesla, but is also buying fewer electric cars overall.

Psychologist Alexandra Flores from Williams College conducted a study revealing that while there was initial enthusiasm among liberals for electric vehicles as of August 2023, that support waned significantly following Musk’s partnership with Trump, which ultimately aided Trump’s victory in the 2024 election.

Moreover, Tesla is facing heightened competition from established automakers like General Motors, Hyundai, and BMW, as they introduce more electric vehicle options. The aging Tesla lineup and the less-than-stellar reception of the CyberTruck also add to the company’s challenges.

This decline in brand loyalty has mirrored an 8% drop in Tesla’s vehicle sales in the U.S. during the first five months of 2025, with particularly strong public backlash against Musk’s political involvement noted in Europe.
