Tesla Sees Increased Sales in the UK

In June, Tesla’s car sales in the UK showed an upward trend compared to the previous year, coinciding with the release of its updated Model Y. This aligns with a broader increase in new vehicle registrations across the UK, which rose by 6.7%, largely due to the heightened interest in battery-electric vehicles.

Even though sales haven’t fully rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, June marked the best performance since 2019. The demand for battery-electric vehicles surged by 39%, amounting to 47,354 units sold, as interest among various buyers continued to grow.

However, it’s important to note that the growth of electric vehicles, including those from Tesla, seems to rely heavily on industry support and discounting strategies, which some might consider unsustainable. Mike Hawes, the CEO of the SMMT, made this observation in a recent report.

Specifically, Tesla moved 7,719 units in June, an increase of 14% from the same month last year. Meanwhile, data from the same group indicated a 12% rise in total new car sales, reaching 7,891 units in June.

While there’s been growth recently, Tesla’s sales in the UK have actually dipped nearly 2% so far this year. In contrast, its Chinese competitor BYD has experienced remarkable growth, nearly quadrupling sales to 2,498 units.

Interestingly, Ford is reported to have the fastest-growing EV sales among its UK competitors in the first half of 2025, with a growth rate that surpasses four times that of last year.

Additionally, a recent US-UK trade agreement has further eased some tariffs, enabling British automakers to export to the US with a reduced tariff rate—cutting down from 27.5% to 10%.
