Flash flood warnings have been issued as rainfall persists in central Texas, where residents are still grappling with the aftermath of the devastating flood that occurred on July 4th.
Counties including Burnett and Northwest Williamson are under a flash flood warning until 10 AM Sunday, along with Tom Green, Brown, Runnel, Coleman, McCulloch, Crockett, Sutton, San Saba, Concho, Kimble, Mason, Cola, Schleicher, Menard, and Illion, which will remain under flood warnings until 1 PM, according to reports.
Flood monitoring is set to continue until 7 PM in Bexar, Travis, Williamson, Hayes, Comal, Valverde, Kerr, Barnett, Medina, Uvalde, Kendall, Gillespie, Rano, Bandera, Blanco, Kinney, Real, and Edwards counties.
At 7 AM, the Lampasas River had surged to 25 feet, highlighting the severity of the situation.
A meteorologist from KHOU showed viewers a flood watch zone extending from the US-Mexico border through West Texas, pointing out that areas in the Hill Country are under heightened risk after experiencing fatal floods.
“This region serves as water supply channels for both the Colorado and Guadalupe Rivers, which were severely impacted last weekend,” he explained.
AccuWeather reports that a frontal system, which is stalled across the Southern Rockies and Southern Plains, is contributing to a variety of thunderstorms from Texas to Arkansas.
Slow-moving thunderstorms can quickly dump several inches of rain, and with the ground already saturated—especially in the Texas Hill Country—flood concerns are expected to persist through Monday.
Residents are advised to stay informed about flood warnings and be prepared to find higher ground should flash floods occur.
Tragically, over 100 lives were lost during the Independence Day floods, with many of the victims being children. Affected communities are now focused on processing their grief and beginning the recovery efforts.
As of the end of last week, Kerr County alone reported 103 fatalities, including 36 children, from the early morning flood on July 4. The total statewide death toll has reached 129, with 160 individuals still unaccounted for.
