NFL Suspends Houston Texans Minority Owner Javier Loya
The NFL has placed Javier Loya, a minority owner of the Houston Texans, on indefinite suspension and imposed a $500,000 fine due to violations of the league’s personal conduct policy. This follows an investigation into serious allegations of rape and sexual abuse that surfaced in Kentucky in 2023, according to a statement from the NFL.
Loya is set to face rape charges, which are linked to two gatherings at his home in Louisville back in May 2022. He has denied these allegations. In a plea deal, Loya accepted a misdemeanor harassment charge, while other charges related to rape and sexual abuse were dropped.
In a statement responding to the NFL’s decision, Loya expressed his disagreement, mentioning that he has been forthcoming with the league throughout the process. He noted that all charges against him were dismissed over a year ago and emphasized his commitment to integrity even as he has stepped back from team and league activities for over two and a half years. He added that he looks forward to working with league leadership to address any ongoing concerns and hopes for reinstatement.
Having been involved with the Texans since their inception in 2002, Loya may seek reinstatement as early as June 2026. The Texans organization stated that Loya has not participated in any club or league activities since his indictment in 2023. They fully supported the NFL’s decision regarding his suspension, asserting that such behavior is unacceptable within their community.
The disciplinary action against Loya comes just months after attorney Tony Buzbee, known for representing multiple women in a high-profile case against Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, brought attention to the NFL’s ongoing investigation into Loya.
Loya is also recognized as the Chairman and CEO of OTC Global Holdings, a significant player in the commodity brokerage space, which he co-founded in 2007. Additionally, he is part of the NFL’s diversity committee that introduced the Rooney Rule, approved in 2022, aimed at increasing minority representation in coaching roles.
