Texans overlook Charlie Kirk during moment of silence

The Houston Texans participated in a moment of silence during their NFL week 2 home game, but their tribute before the Monday night match against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t specifically address Charlie Kirk.

The Texans honor “all victims”

Before kickoff, around 6:40 PM ET, a message was announced through the public address system at NRG Stadium. It called for families to join in honoring all victims of violence and natural disasters throughout the country. The message expressed a hope to unite in condemning violence, thanking everyone for their participation.

The observance lasted for about 10 seconds and was aired on ESPN.

Prior to this, Outkick had inquired whether the Texans would acknowledge Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, who had recently been killed.

The Texans didn’t want to single anyone out

During their pre-game statement, the Texans clarified why Kirk’s name was omitted. They explained that their focus was on honoring all victims rather than highlighting one individual, considering the numerous recent tragedies. This approach, they felt, avoided downplaying the experiences of others.

Clearly, while the Texans recognized the gravity of Kirk’s situation, they opted not to mention it directly.

The Dallas Cowboys took a different approach

In contrast, the Dallas Cowboys, another Texas team, publicly honored Kirk at their game. Owner Jerry Jones shared his perspective on the importance of such tributes.

As for the rest of the league, there was also a scheduled game involving the Las Vegas Raiders hosting the Los Angeles Chargers later that evening. Outkick had reached out to the Raiders to inquire about their plans for a moment of silence but had not received a confirmation on their approach regarding Kirk.
