Texans would be biggest Super Bowl long shot in recent NFL history

The Texans are on the verge of clinching an unlikely playoff berth with a historic Super Bowl title.

Las Vegas oddsmakers, who entered the season with a rookie quarterback behind center and a rookie coach on the sideline, didn't have very high expectations for Houston this season.

The Texans opened at +550 (BetMGM) and made the postseason. According to sports odds historyThis was the second-worst odds in the NFL behind the Cardinals (+1000).

Of course, they also have a very good chance of winning the Lombardi Trophy in February, sitting at +20000 before Week 1, also just ahead of Arizona (+40000).

Since 1978, the Texans became the seventh team to advance to the postseason with preseason odds of 200-1 or higher. According to Evan Abrams of Action Network:.

Now, the young Texans have a chance for a Super Bowl-winning puncher, although they still have little chance of success.

According to SOH, winning the Super Bowl would be the Texans' biggest preseason goal since at least 1977, surpassing the 1999 Rams, who were +15,000 points entering that season.

But even a blowout loss in the playoffs would be shocking to oddsmakers.

The Texans currently have the second-longest Super Bowl odds (+7000) at FanDuel Sportsbook, ahead of only the Buccaneers (+9500).

As of this writing, they lost by two points at home to the Browns and will play in Houston on Saturday at 4:30 pm ET.

No matter how this season ends, the Texans have to be satisfied with the results.

The Texans, who opened with a win total of 5.5 at most sportsbooks, finished the first year of the CJ Stroud and DeMeco Ryans era with a 10-7 record and won the AFC South with a Week 18 win over the Colts. .

Lyons and Stroud are the first rookie head coach-quarterback duo to reach the postseason since Chuck Pagano and Andrew Luck played for the Colts in 2012.

Stroud is on the verge of winning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, and Ryans is squarely in the Coach of the Year conversation.
