Texas AG claims Roblox allows predators: a 'virtual playground for abusers'

Texas Sues Roblox Over Child Safety Concerns

The state of Texas has filed a lawsuit against Roblox, alleging that the popular online game has turned into a “digital playground for predators.” The complaint claims that the platform permits pedophiles to groom children and expose them to inappropriate content.

The lawsuit, initiated by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, asserts that Roblox has misled parents into believing its platform is a safe environment for children. The lawsuit also accuses the company of deceptive trade practices and being a “common destination for child predators” who target minors.

Paxton stated, “We cannot allow platforms like Roblox to continue to operate as digital playgrounds for predators. Roblox must do more to protect children from the sick, twisted freaks hiding behind screens.” He emphasized that companies facilitating child abuse will face severe legal consequences.

This legal action follows similar lawsuits in Louisiana and Kentucky, along with individual cases against Roblox for not adequately addressing the issue of online predators targeting children.

The lawsuit describes Roblox as an “unregulated digital playground” rife with predators and sexual content. It alleges that the in-game currency, Robux, allows predators to lure and exploit children.

“Modern predators are not seducing children with candy; they are luring children with Robux,” the complaint argues.

The filing cites numerous FBI investigations, convictions, and private lawsuits that indicate Roblox has allegedly facilitated child abuse and pornography. This includes a case in Texas where a child, who began using the platform at age 10, was groomed and subsequently raped through Roblox.

As of October, the platform boasted around 151.5 million average daily active users, with a significant portion under the age of 13. Approximately 40% of users will be under that age by 2024.

Paxton’s office has requested a jury trial and seeks various penalties, including fines of $10,000 for each violation of the Texas False Trade Practices Act and an injunction to prevent any further misconduct.

In a response, a Roblox spokesperson said the company shares Paxton’s commitment to online safety. They noted that Roblox has implemented extensive safety measures, including over 145 security protocols in the past year, and plans to introduce age estimation technology to limit interactions between adults and minors.

The spokesperson expressed disappointment that the Attorney General opted for legal action based on “misrepresentations and sensational claims,” rather than collaborating with Roblox to address the challenges facing the industry.
