Texas GOP Senator Angela Paxton Files for Divorce
On Thursday, Texas Senator Angela Paxton announced that she has filed for divorce from her husband, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. This news comes after 38 years of marriage.
In her divorce filing, Angela described the decision as grounded in her interpretation of biblical principles. She remarked, “I believe that marriage is a sacred covenant and have seriously pursued reconciliation. However, in light of recent discoveries, I don’t think it respects God or myself, my child, or Ken.”
Angela’s petition refers to her husband’s adultery as the basis for the divorce. Documents indicate that the couple had not been living together since around June 1, 2024. It seems her reference to “Bible Reasons” aligns with interpretations that allow divorce in cases of infidelity, which is supported by teachings found in the Bible.
Having been first elected to the Senate in 2019, Angela represents the North Texas District previously held by her husband. She won re-election last November for another term.
Meanwhile, Ken Paxton commented that their separation is a way to “start a new chapter” amid ongoing political attacks and public scrutiny surrounding their family.
Ken has been in office for nearly a decade and is currently vying for a Senate seat, facing GOP Senator John Cornyn in the upcoming primary. Known for his confrontational approach to the Biden administration through legal challenges, his tenure has been marred by allegations, including job abuse and bribery, but he has consistently prevailed against these challenges politically. His supporters claim that his battles against Biden’s policies justify some of the controversies he faces.
The Attorney General has faced scrutiny for alleged misuse of his office for personal gain, particularly his connections with real estate developer Nate Paul, along with accusations of extramarital affairs with former aides. An investigation into these claims temporarily closed in 2019 but was reopened in 2020 following Angela’s insight into the matter.
Despite these issues, Ken was acquitted by the Senate after a lengthy trial. Angela noted that while she attended the trial, she could not participate in voting or deliberations regarding the outcome.
Ken’s ability to maintain political resilience is notable; he has secured reelection multiple times, despite his ongoing controversies. However, this recent development may impact his Senate campaign, especially as it provides ammunition for critics like Senator Cornyn, who question his ethics.
Moreover, the divorce might complicate his relationship with prominent supporters, including former President Donald Trump, who has been discussed in relation to the upcoming Senate race.
