Texas Triumphs Over Kentucky in Overtime
In Lexington, Ky., Mason Shipley kicked a 45-yard field goal in overtime, leading No. 21 Texas to a 16-13 victory over Kentucky on Saturday night. This win came despite Arch Manning’s less-than-stellar performance and a shaky outing from the Longhorns’ defense.
Shipley initially gave Texas (5-2, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) a 13-10 advantage with a 39-yard field goal just a minute before the end of regulation.
Kentucky (2-4, 0-4) managed to tie the game at 13 with a 45-yard field goal from Jacob Cowe with only nine seconds remaining, pushing the match into overtime.
Even though the Longhorns only racked up 179 total yards, they relied on two significant punt returns by Ryan Niblett to maintain control against the Wildcats.
Niblett’s 43-yard return in the fourth quarter helped set up Shipley’s second-half field goal, and earlier, he had also successfully made a 53-yard attempt in the third quarter.
Texas quarterback Arch Manning passed for 132 yards, while running back Quintrevion Wisner scored the team’s sole touchdown in the second quarter.
Kentucky’s defense proved tough, limiting Texas to just 93 total yards during the first half. The Longhorns’ only touchdown was scored with 6:22 left before halftime when Niblett returned a punt following DJ Campbell’s fumble recovery in the end zone.
In the fourth quarter, with Texas leading 10-3, Kentucky equalized when quarterback Cutter Bouley ran 16 yards for a touchdown with 12:04 remaining. Bouley had a strong game, throwing for 258 yards and adding 27 rushing yards, effectively doubling Texas’s offensive yardage with a total of 395 yards.
