Texas Democrat aims to push for Epstein vote before anticipated approval of new map

Texas Democrats are attempting to put Republicans on the defensive as a GOP-favored map is likely to pass, by altering the vote regarding Jeffrey Epstein’s documents.

Texas House Minority Leader Gene Wu is introducing a revision that stipulates the new house map can only move forward once Attorney General Pam Bondi releases files related to controversial investors.

The amendment demands that Bondi’s office “will not be adopted until it is made available in a searchable and downloadable format,” including all uncategorized records, documents, communications, and research tied to the Department of Justice, the FBI, and U.S. Attorneys concerning Epstein.

The Texas House is scheduled to convene at 11 a.m., where it is anticipated that a new house map will pass, potentially allowing Republicans to secure five additional seats before the 2026 elections.

Epstein’s files are a complicated issue for President Trump, with both major parties advocating for the release of more information connected to Epstein.

Epstein was charged with sex trafficking and conspiracy before his death in prison in 2019, which authorities ruled a suicide, despite widespread skepticism regarding the circumstances.

Trump has commented on the situation during his campaign, mentioning the declassification of documents related to Epstein, a figure from whom he has sought to distance himself. Yet, some of his staunch supporters have expressed dissatisfaction with how the Epstein case has been handled.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Bondi informed Trump his name was included in Epstein’s documents alongside other high-profile individuals, though this doesn’t imply any wrongdoing on Trump’s part. Nevertheless, it hasn’t deterred Democrats from applying pressure on Republicans over the matter.

Wu stated, “Trump is in those files, which is why he’s trying to keep them under wraps.” He also pointed out the irony that while pushing through maps touted as racially biased, Trump is helping Congressional Republicans keep hidden documents that might unveil longstanding connections to child sex traffickers. “This amendment forces Republicans to choose between loyalty to Trump and the need to expose sexual predators,” he concluded.
