Texas Representative Vicente Gonzalez, a Democrat, has attempted to distance himself from his previous immigration positions. However, newly surfaced audio revealed by the Daily Caller showcases the extreme nature of his views.
In the past, Gonzalez was the leader of a bill known as the Immigration Bill, which proposed establishing a “safe zone” along the U.S.-Mexico border along with a facility in Guatemala where individuals could apply for asylum in the United States.
His proposal included not just taxpayer-funded facilities but also covered housing, food, medical care, and even air travel to bring immigrants to their chosen destinations. It’s quite a package, really. I mean, the extent of it seems almost ambitious.
In an episode of PBS NewsHour from 2023, Gonzalez stated, “We will create zones in Guatemala, Panama, Colombia, and other countries where migrants can apply for asylum in those situations.” This was in relation to the current credibility standards used at the southern border. “If we are ultimately going to let them into the country under the credible fear standard that we currently use, we should allow them to fly to their destination,” he added.
Recently, however, Gonzalez has shifted his focus, hosting events that seem to sidestep immigration, and notably, his campaign website does not mention immigration policy at all.
It’s worth mentioning that Gonzalez’s district in Texas has been redrawn recently, making him one of the more vulnerable incumbents in this election cycle. Texas’s Legislature showed a significant preference for Trump, leaning toward him by a 10-point margin for the upcoming 2024 election.
On important votes, he has crossed party lines; for instance, he joined Republicans in passing the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2027, which included President Trump’s legislative priorities. Fascinating how these dynamics play out.
Additionally, Gonzalez was among the seven House Democrats who endorsed funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during the vote to end the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown earlier this year.
Gonzalez is set to face off against Republican candidate Eric Flores on November 3. As of now, his campaign hasn’t responded to requests for comments from the Daily Caller.
