James Talarico, a Texas Democrat, is navigating his campaign with financial support from surprising sources, including wealthy Republican donors. Recent records reveal that the bulk of Talarico’s funding in the past year came from a political action committee backed by Miriam Adelson, a prominent Republican megadonor. Specifically, Talarico accepted $59,000 from Adelson’s Texas Sands PAC in 2024, marking it as his largest contribution for that year.
His office has defended the acceptance of these funds. A spokesperson mentioned that Talarico opposes the overwhelming influence of money in elections, yet, he feels he can’t afford to take a different approach than Texas Republicans. “Rep. Talarico believes our campaign finance system is deeply broken,” explained Antonio Esparza, the spokesperson, highlighting Talarico’s push to amend Texas laws to impose stricter campaign contribution limits.
In a recent development, after appearing on the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast, Talarico criticized the political landscape, stating that virtually every Republican senator in Texas is benefitting from big financial backers. He emphasized that this pattern is rampant in the Texas government.
Interestingly, Adelson’s PAC has a history of funding both Democrats and Republicans in Texas, especially as the push for legalized casino gambling gains traction. Talarico himself voted in support of a measure that could allow casino legalization through constitutional amendments in 2023.
This month, Talarico and around 50 fellow Democrats left Texas in a bid to block Republicans from redistricting efforts. After returning to Austin, they expressed a sense of accomplishment in energizing Democratic opposition as upcoming elections loom. As political parties grapple for dominance in the House leading up to the 2026 elections, several Democratic states are exploring their own redistricting strategies.
