Texas Democrat Under Fire for Comments About Non-Whites Taking Over the Country

Texas Democratic Representative Gene Wu has faced backlash after some of his racist comments from a December 2024 podcast resurfaced on social media.

In the episode titled “Defining an American through Jose Antonio Vargas,” which aired on December 31, 2024, Wu’s remarks about white individuals were highlighted and criticized by various figures, including Republican Senator Ted Cruz and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The clip gained over 12.5 million views after it was shared by the account End Wokeness on Saturday night.

During the interview, Wu remarked to Vargas that, “I think you made exactly the right point, and it’s not just Latinos. It’s not just Asians. It’s not just African Americans. It’s everyone. It’s everywhere.” He emphasized that societal divisions were a result of various groups viewing each other as competitors rather than recognizing they share the same oppressor.

Wu added, “Oppression comes from one place. I always tell people that the day Latinos, African Americans, Asians, and other communities realize that they share the same oppressor is the day we start winning. Because we’re the majority in this country right now.” He noted the potential for these communities to unify and create change but expressed concern about their current divisions.

In the recent 2024 election, Donald Trump won 46% of the Hispanic vote, 40% of the Asian vote, and 13% of the Black vote, defeating Kamala Harris. In comparison, his figures from the 2020 election were lower, with 32% of Hispanic voters, 34% of Asian voters, and 12% of Black voters.

RNC spokesman Zach Kraft criticized Wu’s comments, labeling them as a troubling signal for Democrats. He suggested that silence on these remarks from within the party was telling. Kraft noted the ongoing issues within the Texas Democratic Party, citing behaviors like James Talarico’s apologies for “white privilege” and Jasmine Crockett’s claims of discrimination affecting her campaign.
