Texas Democrats promise to keep fighting after Abbott calls for their arrests.

Texas legislators have promised to continue their opposition to Republican efforts aimed at redrawing Congressional district maps following an arrest order from Governor Greg Abbott.

A group of state lawmakers, alongside Texas Democrats, held a press conference on Monday after some lawmakers left for unfamiliar places. This was a move to thwart the GOP’s push for midterm electoral changes that could secure them additional seats. The legislators had gathered earlier at a special session called by Abbott but could not conduct business due to a lack of quorum, as many Democrats remain in other states like Illinois, New York, or Massachusetts.

Those in Illinois criticized the map discussed during the conference, labeling it “blatant racism.” They argued that the proposed changes would undermine the political influence of Hispanic and Black communities through gerrymandering tactics.

State Rep. Anna Maria Rodriguez Ramos, who leads the Texas Legislature’s progressive caucus, emphasized that instead of focusing on critical issues like affordability and healthcare, Republicans are backing what she described as “maps of racist radical rezoning.”

If implemented, this new map could allow the GOP to gain five seats currently held by Democrats.

Rodriguez Ramos pointed out that over 60% of Texans identify as Hispanic, African-American, or Asian. “But they want to keep our voices silent,” she asserted. “This is nothing short of blatant racism.”

State Sen. John Beussie remarked that while he didn’t intend to leave the Capitol, Democrats had to take action. He mentioned that legislators had surpassed the usual retirement age and stressed that adhering to their oaths sometimes means opting out of “rigged games.”

Beussie also noted that the special session that Abbott initiated was initially meant to address relief efforts following a devastating flood that resulted in over 100 fatalities but had shifted focus to district plans instead.

“We’re not fleeing,” Beussie stated. “We’re in this struggle.”

He underlined the urgency of the situation by saying, “When you lose the ability to choose a leader, you lose everything.”

The press conference included U.S. House members who stand to lose their positions if the new map goes through.

Rep. Julie Johnson (D-Texas), a former state legislator, urged Democrats in other states to consider similar actions if Texas’ redistricting is approved. Governors from states like California and New York have shown interest in redrawing their boundaries should Texas go ahead with its plans.

Johnson emphasized that Democrats need to take decisive action, stating, “This is an all-out war. Everything is on the table.” She declared that Democrats can no longer sit idly by.

Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), also affected by the potential map changes, warned that success for Texas Republicans could set a precedent in other states. He expressed solidarity with the courage displayed by state legislators.

“It’s not just about Texas,” Green noted. “If they win here, they’ll push this in other states, at the county level, and even in school boards.”

The actions taken by Texas lawmakers in leaving the state prompted a surge in discussion at the national level regarding the implications of redistricting. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker announced on Sunday that he would safeguard Texas House members from arrest while they are in Illinois.

This decision may temporarily stall GOP plans for new maps, but the overall impact remains uncertain.
