A Texas deputy constable was “ambushed” and shot by a robbery suspect after a police pursuit in Harris County on Friday, Constable Mark Herman of Harris County’s 4th Precinct confirmed.
Herman identified the deputy officer as Deterion Fontenette.
“Please pray for Officer Deterion Fontenette,” Herman wrote on social media. “Please pray for Officer Deterion Fontenette, who was ambushed and shot by a suspected robber today and has been transported to a local hospital.”
The unidentified suspect was later taken into custody, Herman said.

“Our deputy is going to be OK, he’s just going to need surgery on his face,” Herman said at a news conference. “I would say God was watching over our deputy and God was watching over us not to kill this suspect when we had every right to do so.”
Herman said the deputy’s patrol car had 16 holes in it and “there was also a hole in the window of the car where the deputy was standing.”

He said he plans to charge the suspect with attempted murder of a police officer.

The high-speed pursuit began after the suspect robbed two Harris County Academy stores with an AR-15 and failed to stop for Fontenette, who recognized the suspect’s vehicle.
Fontenette was then shot at by the fleeing suspect in the 5300 block of Thrushwood Lane in Spring, who ran into a house.

The suspect was detained after police surrounded the house where he was hiding.
