Texas Deputy Constable Shot, Killed on Way to Work in Ambush-Style Attack

HOUSTON, Texas — A Harris County Precinct 4 police officer was ambushed and killed on his way to work Tuesday afternoon. Local media reports say the gunman fled the scene before returning and shooting the officer again.

Harris County Precinct 4 Sergeant Noe Diaz told reporters the shooting happened around 12:35 p.m. near Richmond Street and Fondren. Diaz said the suspect got out of his car, walked up to the sergeant's vehicle and opened fire. KTRK ABC13 ReportedThe deputy was transported to Ben Taub Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Update, 5pm: Fox 26 Houston reports Officer Herman's office identified the slain deputy as 50-year-old Maher Husseini.

FOX 26 also reports that the suspect in the officer's murder was found after his car plunged into water near Old Causeway Road in Galveston, Texas.

Updated 5:05 p.m. Texas Governor Greg Abbott expressed concern for VP Husseini's family, writing:

“Texans are heartbroken today by the news that Harris County Deputy Constable Maher Husseini was shot and killed while on his way to work,” said Governor Abbott. “The dangerous criminals who ambushed and killed Deputy Husseini will face the full force of the law. Texas is a state of law and order, and I will always defend the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect Texans. Cecilia and I ask my fellow Texans to join me in praying for Deputy Husseini's family and loved ones.”

Click2Houston Reported Houston police said the shooter fled on foot but returned and fired more shots at the deputy. Officer Mark Herman told the NBC affiliate that the deputy was stopped at a red light in his personal vehicle when the shots were fired. The deputy was reportedly wearing uniform pants and a work belt. It is unclear if he was wearing dress uniform at the time.

Authorities told reporters they are searching for a man between 35 and 40 years old who they believe to be a Middle Eastern dissident. He is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs about 200 pounds. Officer Herman did not release the deputy's name, but told NBC News that the deputy was a 50-year-old man who had been with the police force for about three years and had been promoted within the force just last week.
