A 62-year-old Texas engineer, Andrew James Wimsatt, was killed in a shocking and unprovoked attack while he sat on a park bench. This incident occurred on September 7, shortly after he had visited his mother at a nursing home in Round Rock, according to various reports.
Authorities arrested 26-year-old Benedict Chinedu Ogbodiegwu on charges of murder and theft. The arrest followed the release of surveillance footage showing the brutal attack, which took place around 11 a.m.
According to court documents, Ogbodiegwu allegedly approached Wimsatt from behind and stabbed him multiple times in the neck before nonchalantly wiping his shirt and walking away.
Wimsatt was a retired civil engineer and held a Ph.D., working for the Texas A&M Transportation Institute. He was a familiar face in the world of Fox News, often appearing on shows like “Gutfeld!” and previously on “Red Eye.” He had developed friendships with numerous personalities at the network during his time attending live events and sharing segments from the shows.
Greg Gutfeld expressed disbelief at the crime, saying, “It’s so heinous and shocking that I’m still trying to comprehend it, and I may never.” He initially felt suspicious about the motivations behind the attack but recognized that Wimsatt was genuinely generous, often helping others just because he liked doing it.
Kat Timpf, another Fox News personality and friend of Wimsatt, shared her deep upset over his loss, feeling both “shocked, disgusted and angry.” She recalled how Wimsatt had become a friend after starting as a fan. “Cam and I just had lunch with him in June when he drove from Austin to see my return to the stage,” she recalled. Their connection was strong, with Timpf noting they communicated frequently, especially when trolls targeted her online.
A passerby contacted the police after discovering Wimsatt injured in the park. Unfortunately, first responders declared him dead at the scene.
Cops managed to identify Ogbodiegwu after discovering blood-soaked clothing and the weapon used in the murder. When questioned, Ogbodiegwu provided a bizarre alibi involving a nonexistent twin brother but couldn’t provide a name for this supposed sibling.
His criminal history dates back to 2017, with his most recent arrests earlier in 2026 for theft and carrying a fake ID. He had just been released from jail in June after serving several months. Currently, he remains in custody with a bond set at $1 million and is scheduled to appear in court again on October 8.
