A known gang member was arrested after a shooting and standoff in Weslaco, Texas, Tuesday night, officials said.
Weslaco Police Chief Joel Rivera held a news conference late Tuesday night to explain the incident, which lasted several hours.
Around 7 p.m., police received a report of a man driving around in a Chevrolet pickup truck with a rifle in an area adjacent to a hardware store off Abelin Drive, Rivera said.
When officers arrived on scene, they were told by the homeowner that the suspect had fired a gun, striking someone. Rivera said the shot victim’s injuries are not believed to be fatal.

Officers attempted to pull over the driver of a Chevrolet pickup truck, which the homeowner described as a vehicle. Rivera said the driver drove to his home in Weslaco to avoid police and barricaded himself inside, according to local news outlets. valleycentral.com.
Two women were trapped inside the house, and police said they helped a disabled woman escape through a window while the suspect remained inside.
Law enforcement negotiated with the suspect for several hours before a tactical team from the Sheriff’s Office entered the home and took the suspect into custody.

Rivera said the suspect has a long criminal history and is a known member of the Valco gang.
His previous charges include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon and carjacking.
Rivera said the pickup truck driven by the suspect was reported stolen from the city of Donna on Monday night.
The suspect was transported to the Weslaco Police Department and is expected to be arraigned on multiple charges Wednesday.
