Texas GOP representative officially resigns amid threat of expulsion

Rep. Tony Gonzalez (R-Texas), currently under significant scrutiny, announced his resignation from Congress on Tuesday, a step that brings his time in the House to an unexpected close.

The letter detailing his resignation was shared on the House floor late that evening, marking the culmination of a series of controversies surrounding him. In his letter, Gonzalez expressed, “It is my honor to serve the residents of Texas’ 23rd Congressional District.”

This resignation comes amidst mounting pressures for him to step down, spurred on by figures like Representatives Cory Mills (R-Fla.), Sheila Cherfilus McCormick (D-Fla.), and former congressman Eric Swalwell from California. The allegations against him have been serious and varied.

Just prior to Gonzalez’s resignation being announced, Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez (D.N.M.) introduced a resolution aimed at expelling him from Congress. This move followed Gonzalez’s failure to adhere to a timeline for his resignation.

It’s noteworthy that, before submitting his resignation, Gonzalez hinted at his decision on Monday but was vague about the timing, leading Fernandez to pursue the expulsion route.

After 13 years in Congress, Gonzalez has been engulfed in allegations of sexual misconduct. According to Leger Fernandez, “Congressman Tony Gonzalez has admitted to wrongdoing and has also admitted to having sexual relations with staff members, essentially sexually assaulting them.”

Gonzalez, a married father of six, acknowledged an affair with a former aide, Regina Santos Aviles, who tragically later took her own life. However, he has not conceded to a secondary allegation of misconduct involving another former staff member.

Additionally, he was the subject of an inquiry by the House Ethics Committee.

In March, Gonzalez opted out of his re-election campaign as the scandal precipitated a swift response from House Republican leaders, urging him to withdraw.

Coincidentally, Swalwell’s resignation was announced immediately following Gonzalez’s. Swalwell’s resignation came after serious allegations of sexual misconduct and even rape from five women, prompting the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office to launch a criminal investigation into the claims related to an incident in a New York hotel.

In his resignation letter, Swalwell expressed remorse towards his family and constituents while declaring his intention to challenge the allegations against him, saying, “I will fight the materially false allegations made against me. But I have to take responsibility for the mistakes I made.”
