Texas Governor Encourages Gluten-Free Reporter to Drink Beer – Discusses Faith and Resilience After Life-Altering Accident

Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s Candid Conversation

Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently provided a glimpse into his personal life and resilience during an unfiltered conversation captured in a TMZ video. In this clip, he exchanged his usual political rhetoric for a more relaxed chat about his faith, fitness, and the challenges he faced after a life-changing accident.

The video was recorded during a visit to the historic Texas Governor’s Mansion in Austin, where Abbott showcased a different side of himself—his sharp humor, warmth, and unyielding work ethic. Since a tree fell on him in 1984, leaving him paralyzed, these traits have become part of his identity.

During a gathering connected to a University of Texas event, Abbott offered the entertainment reporter, Jacob Wasserman, a traditional Texas beer, Shiner Bock. Wasserman, who usually adheres to a strict gluten-free diet, hesitated at first but eventually accepted Abbott’s friendly encouragement and drank it. Abbott humorously remarked, “History was made,” prompting laughter from those present.

The conversation transitioned from playful banter to a more serious discussion about Abbott’s resilience. Wasserman directly queried how Abbott coped with becoming paraplegic and managed the realities of life in a wheelchair.

Abbott shared the story of the freak accident in July 1984, when, at 26, a large oak tree fell on him during a jog in Houston. The incident left him with crushed vertebrae, broken ribs, and damaged organs, resulting in permanent paralysis from the waist down after surgeons inserted steel rods into his spine.

Instead of focusing on the misfortune, Abbott reframed it as a test of his character. “It shows that even an accident like that does not slow you down,” he noted, adding, “It was after that I went on to become governor of the great state of Texas.”

When asked to elaborate on how he moved forward mentally, Abbott described it as a significant challenge. He acknowledged that it can feel overwhelming but explained his decision was to choose progress over stagnation. “I chose to move forward,” he explained. “Every step of the way, I met with success.”

“One thing I did: I worked hard,” he continued, emphasizing that hard work often leads to good outcomes in life. He also spoke about the physical demands of governing while living with a disability, noting that he maintains a rigorous upper-body workout regimen from his past as a competitive athlete.

Abbott’s determination has characterized his public life, allowing him to overcome obstacles and achieve significant milestones such as passing the bar, serving as a trial judge, sitting on the Texas Supreme Court, and being elected attorney general before becoming governor. He is currently in his third term, having first been elected in November 2014.

This exchange illustrates what Abbott’s supporters have long recognized: a leader who faces adversity with warmth and relentless determination. In a media landscape that often simplifies conservative figures, the TMZ visit presented a straightforward view of Abbott—a man navigating the consequences of a tragic event in 1984 while demonstrating that setbacks don’t define one’s story.
