Texas governor explains his strong partnership with Trump

In a recent conversation, Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott discussed his collaboration with President Trump, particularly highlighting the deployment of the National Guard to support ICE operations in Chicago. Abbott emphasized the “substantive reasons” for their strong working relationship, noting that both leaders share a commitment to the rule of law, public safety, and border security.

Abbott expressed satisfaction with their partnership, saying they are closely aligned in efforts to maintain safety across the country. As for the current deployment, about 200 Texas National Guard troops are in the Chicago area to protect federal officers involved in immigration enforcement amid ongoing anti-ICE protests, which have escalated into violence at times.

In recent weeks, incidents have occurred where crowds obstructed access to ICE facilities, leading to confrontations with federal agents. There’s a feeling of tension in Chicago, and it’s noted that Illinois Democratic leaders have not extended support to federal agents in these operations.

In the face of rising chaos, Abbott had previously allowed Trump to mobilize 400 Texas National Guard members to tackle unrest nationwide, although only around half are currently deployed in Illinois due to pending legal challenges regarding the deployment.

Abbott described the guardsmen’s experience in dealing with civil disorder, gained through prior deployments along the Texas border, as a strong asset for their role in Illinois. He thinks it makes sense for the National Guard to assist wherever they’re needed, especially given their training.

He clarified that the National Guard’s intention is not to act as local police but to ensure that federal law enforcement can perform their duties effectively. “It’s about supporting the constitutional responsibilities related to immigration and public safety,” he said, reiterating the strategic alignment between Texas and the federal government.

While he didn’t outline any specific future collaborations with the Trump administration, Abbott affirmed Texas’s readiness to respond to the nation’s needs, asserting that Texans are committed to assisting in any capacity required.
