Texas Issues Arrest Warrants for Absent Democrats

Texas took a significant step on Monday, moving forward with plans to issue arrest warrants for over 50 Democrats who missed a crucial vote at the Chamber of Commerce related to redistricting efforts led by the Republicans.

In response, Democrats have indicated they might leave the state for traditionally blue areas like Illinois and New York, effectively breaking the quorum. Their absence, noted at the 3 p.m. adjournment of the Chamber, enables state legislator Dustin Burrows to authorize civil warrants, allowing local officials to employ citizen arrest tactics and potentially send state troops to bring them back to the Capitol.

Burrows remarked, “The Sergeant and her appointees are directed to issue arrest warrants as needed and ensure attendance until further notice.” This measure aims to maintain legislative presence despite the absent members.

Importantly, these absent lawmakers are not set to face any civil or criminal repercussions, as reported by the Texas Tribune. The warrants issued would only have effect within Texas, rendering them largely symbolic.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton expressed his support for the warrants, emphasizing a commitment to hold what he termed “jet-setting runaways” accountable for not fulfilling their official duties. Paxton criticized the Democrats for neglecting their responsibilities, framing their departure as a publicity maneuver.

Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has also weighed in, stating, “Texas House Democrats have abandoned their obligations,” and highlighted the potential negative impact on legislative measures crucial for flood victims and property tax relief. He confirmed the order directing the Texas Department of Public Safety to locate, arrest, and return these lawmakers to the Capitol, which will remain in effect until a sufficient number of Democrats participate in legislative activities.
