Texas icon anticipates great things for Longhorns before Red River Rivalry match against Oklahoma

Red River Rivalry Returns

This Saturday, the Red River Rivalry is back, and Colt McCoy, a familiar face in this storied matchup, was seen in Dallas on Friday. He’s eager to see his former team, the Texas Longhorns, continue their quest for a national title.

While McCoy never achieved that ultimate success in Austin, he did manage to gain the upper hand during his tenure, finishing with a 3-1 record against Oklahoma. Notably, he led his Texas team to a memorable 45-35 victory over the top-ranked Sooners when the Longhorns were fifth in the national standings.

Interestingly, Texas has managed to win three out of the last four meetings, making a nice comeback after struggling in previous years where they lost 10 out of 13, including the 2018 Big 12 Championship Game.

Reflecting on the rivalry, McCoy shared his thoughts with Fox News Digital, expressing how special the atmosphere is—right there in the Cotton Bowl, with fans split right down the middle. “You just feel the sanctity of that place when you walk down the tunnel,” he said, adding that it marks a significant moment in the season. “This is kind of the kickoff into your conference.”

He recalled the intensity of rivalry games, noting that any team can face challenges on that day, regardless of their season record. It’s a thrilling experience being back. “This is just a really fun weekend,” he declared.

During his time in Dallas, he also interacted with fans while promoting Fanatics, which specializes in Red River Rivalry merchandise. McCoy enthusiastically remarked on the unwavering support of Texas fans, highlighting the special nature of the game that players eagerly anticipate every year.

As he reminisced about the moments leading up to the rivalry, McCoy mentioned how difficult it was to focus on the game when faced with so much excitement. “Generally, we didn’t play great if I can remember right,” he noted, reflecting on past performances before the rivalry, but acknowledged how the atmosphere quickly ramped up the intensity once they hit the locker room.

Switching gears, McCoy mentioned his time in the NFL, where he had to push the rivalry aside. Despite having experienced remarkable teammates from Oklahoma, he couldn’t help but relish the chance to back Texas now that he’s no longer in the game.

Looking at the current Longhorns squad, McCoy is optimistic. “We’re 4-0 and number one in the country. The sky’s the limit for this team,” he said. He believes this roster may be Texas’s most talented in years, citing their skill and coaching, which leaves him confident they won’t be outmatched in any game.

He concluded with a sense of hope, saying, “This really should give everyone on that team a lot of confidence.”
