The department said at least 42 people were hospitalized.

Health officials said most often the cases are for individuals who have not been vaccinated or have unknown vaccination status. He added that only four cases have occurred in people who have been fully vaccinated with the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, with one case occurring among those who received the vaccine at a single dose.

The DSHS said 169 cases were children between the ages of 5 and 17, and 169 cases were children under the age of four.

“Due to the highly contagious nature of the disease, additional cases may occur in the outbreak area and surrounding communities. DSHS is working with the local health department to investigate the outbreak,” the department's announcement stated.

As of Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 483 measles cases this year in at least 19 states: Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Tenas and Tenet.
