Texas Overtakes California in Fortune 500 Companies

Texas has officially taken the lead over California in terms of the number of Fortune 500 companies based in the state.

The 2026 Fortune 500 list, which reflects fiscal revenue data from 2025, shows Texas leading with 57 companies, according to findings shared by PR Newswire.

California closely follows with 56 companies, while New York comes in third with 53.

Among the top ten companies listed, both Texas and California each have two representatives.

Fortune 500 companies contribute significantly to the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP), generating $21 trillion in revenue and employing over 30 million people worldwide.

Interestingly, Texas also tops the list in combined revenue from these companies, amounting to $2.8 trillion. However, California leads in other areas, including profitability and overall company valuation, and it employs the highest number of people across all states—approximately 2.8 million.

Texas stands out as the only state with two cities in the top five: Houston and Dallas. Still, New York City remains a powerhouse:

  • New York City at 43
  • Houston at 25
  • Chicago at 14
  • Atlanta at 13
  • Dallas at 11

“Texas is the undisputed headquarters of headquarters,” remarked Governor Greg Abbott (R-Texas) in a statement regarding the development. “World-leading businesses invest confidently in Texas due to our welcoming business climate, predictable regulatory environment, and a skilled, growing workforce. People and businesses are choosing Texas because Texas works.”
