During Thursday’s opening round of the Valero Texas Open, Jordan Spieth was 4 over with three holes remaining. It was his last chance to get back on track before the Masters was quickly eliminated.
Next is the 16th par 3.
Spieth made a perfect shot from 199 yards remaining, making the hole-in-one and electrifying the San Antonio crowd. He followed with a birdie on the 17th hole and finished the opening day at 1 over, above the expected cut line.
The Texas native also got a new Lexus.
Well, Golf Channel writer Rex Hoggard said this. Social media And here’s what Spieth’s friend Rickie Fowler planned to do about it.
Fowler was photographed taking Spieth into the car and signing his name on the windshield. There’s nothing like having a friend ravage your new car with a sharpie.
Spieth then carried that momentum from the end of Thursday’s round into Friday. He started the day at No. 10 and shocked the board with four birdies in his first five holes.
In the end, he shot a 4-under 68 and moved up to 70 on the leaderboard. As of this writing, Spieth is tied for 10th place, so there’s no doubt he’ll head into the weekend satisfied.
Incidentally, despite the rough start, the three-time major champion feels pretty strong about his recent game.
“He’s playing much better than he scores and he doesn’t look like it. It’s hard to explain,” Spieth said after Thursday’s round.
“I’ve played much worse than I’ve ever missed and finished in the top 10 in back-to-back years. It’s very strange. I feel good about my game, but I’m not getting much. I feel like that.”
He definitely accomplished a lot on Friday.
