Texas parents provided an unbelievable reason for leaving their 6-month-old unattended on the beach.

Two parents thought it was fine to leave their baby alone on a Florida beach, figuring that since the infant usually napped for over an hour, they wouldn’t be gone long.

Brian Wilkes and his wife, Sarah Somers Wilkes, were returning around noon on October 10—almost an hour after they reportedly left their baby girl unattended as they spent time with their three older kids on Miramar Beach.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office reported that Wilkes mentioned the infant was typically asleep at that time, which is why they felt secure about leaving her in the tent. He admitted to losing track of time, not realizing how long they had been absent, with their departure noted around 11:10 a.m. and their return close to 12:06 p.m.

Witnesses observed the couple walking down the beach with the older children and stated that the kids had run off ahead. Wilkes explained that while they were supposed to be on the lookout, they ended up trailing behind the older ones.

After a while, people noticed the baby alone under the tent, prompting them to alert hotel security and then the police.

Meanwhile, good Samaritans took care of the baby until help arrived. As the couple made their way back, they were arrested, though fortunately, the baby was found healthy. The parents, aged 40 and 37, faced charges of child neglect without great bodily harm and spent the night in jail before posting $1,000 bail. The four children were taken to a child welfare facility until relatives could come to pick them up.

Some individuals raised concerns about whether the police response was excessive, with comments on social media reflecting that similar situations were common in the past without much fuss. One person mentioned how, back in the day, leaving a child in a tent would have been brushed off without a second thought. Others empathized, suggesting they could easily see how this could happen, though they pondered why one parent didn’t stay nearby.

On the flip side, some voiced strong opinions against leaving young kids unattended on a public beach. A concerned mother expressed her disbelief, stating she couldn’t even step away from her daughter for a moment.
