Tragic Incident in Uvalde, Texas

In a heartbreaking event, a member of President Tony Gonzalez’s staff tragically died after being found severely burned at her home in Uvalde, Texas. Regina Santos Aviles, a 35-year-old married mother, passed away on Sunday morning. Reports indicate that her mother was involved in the incident, allegedly having set the fire and then called for help.

Nora An Gonzalez, Regina’s mother, shared with the San Antonio Express News that she arrived at her daughter’s residence to find her outside. Remarkably, Regina was still conscious when emergency responders arrived on the scene.

“The last thing she said was, ‘I don’t want to die,'” her mother recounted. “And the responders assured her, ‘We will do our best to take care of you.’

According to Uvalde Volunteer Fire Station Chief Mario Lingel, the firefighters received a call late Saturday night regarding individuals involved in the fire. Fortunately, the danger from the flames had diminished by the time they arrived, although their response was still critical given the proximity of the fire to the station.

“When we arrived, we learned that the fire had spread behind the residence,” Lingel explained. “Fire extinguishers had already been used, and EMS was treating the injured woman. She was eventually taken by EMS to a hospital in San Antonio.”

Police Chief Homer E. Delgado stated that standard procedures were being followed in the investigation of the incident, but so far, there are no indications of foul play. The police are collaborating with the family as they navigate this tragic situation.

“As your police chief, my heart goes out to the grieving family and friends,” he remarked. “We’ve all been affected by this distressing news.” Rep. Gonzalez (R-Texas) added, “Regina was passionate about her work and community, always striving to improve Uvalde for everyone.”

Currently, the Uvalde Police Department, along with the Texas Rangers, is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
