Texas Political Landscape Heats Up Ahead of 2026 Elections
As the 2026 elections approach, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is stepping up his challenge against established Republican senators, spotlighting Senator John Cornyn’s efforts in the ongoing rezoning battle in Texas. It’s becoming clear that this could evolve into one of the most contentious and costly Senate races during next year’s midterm elections.
The Lone Star Liberty PAC has released a digital advertisement featuring a cable news snippet that captures Paxton’s attempts to track down Texas Democrats who left the state to stop a new GOP congressional map from being passed. One clip notably includes conservative media figures praising Paxton’s initiative, asserting that they would “remove some of these lawmakers from their duties,” alongside an image of Paxton with former President Donald Trump.
This Republican initiative, aiming to rally behind Trump, ties into a larger GOP strategy intended to secure slim congressional majorities in 2026. Historically, political parties in power face challenges during midterm cycles, often leading to losses.
Recalling history, Trump’s political team is determined to avoid a repeat of the midterm elections of 2018, where Democrats gained significant ground. During the Texas conflict, a notable focus has been on how the battle for district maps unfolds across the nation, with Democratic and Republican governors engaging in their own gerrymandering efforts.
Recently, Cornyn sent an emergency letter to the FBI requesting assistance in tracking down a Democratic Texas legislator who had fled the state. The FBI appeared to grant this request, leading Cornyn to express pride in their pursuit. “We cannot allow these unfair legislators to avoid constitutional responsibility,” he stated.
However, it is uncertain whether the FBI will be effective in bringing any of the lawmakers back to Texas. Meanwhile, Paxton is exploring the possibility that political action committees, linked to former Democratic Representative Beto O’Rourke, may have breached state laws in their support for fleeing lawmakers.
At a press conference, Paxton remarked, “Any Democrat who breaks the law by taking Beto’s bribes will be held accountable.” O’Rourke, who previously lost the Democratic presidential nomination and was defeated by Texas Governor Greg Abbott in 2022, is now contemplating a run for the Senate seat in 2026. His allegiance to the fleeing Texas Democrats has been noted.
In response, O’Rourke took to social media, calling out Paxton, “The man who was criticized for bribery is now targeting those fighting against theft.” He aims to spotlight what he describes as unfair tactics aimed at Democrats.
Texas Democrat Senator James Tarico is also expected to enter the Senate race, having recently been one of the legislators who fled to Illinois to obstruct votes on district plans. Since settling there, he has participated in numerous media interviews.
The only major Democrat to officially announce his candidacy so far is former Colin Allred, who expresses support for the fleeing lawmakers, although he hasn’t received as much media attention as Tarico or O’Rourke.
