Texas Remembers: Tributes for DPS Special Ops SSgt. Shelton Following Courageous Fight Against Cancer

Texas Law Enforcement Community Mourns the Loss of Staff Sergeant Sterling Matthias Shelton

The Texas law enforcement community is grieving the loss of Staff Sergeant Sterling Matthias Shelton, who passed away on October 8, 2026. Shelton, a member of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), bravely battled aggressive brain cancer for 15 months, a condition that was initially revealed after he suffered a heat stroke in July 2025.

The announcement of the 29-year-old’s death on Friday prompted an overwhelming wave of grief, prayers, and tributes from people across Texas.

In a statement on social media, the DPS expressed their sorrow: “The Texas Department of Public Safety mourns the passing of Staff Sergeant Sterling Shelton following his courageous battle with cancer. We honor his service and the lives he touched throughout his career. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and DPS family during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Sergeant Shelton. Your service will never be forgotten.”

For seven years, Shelton dedicated himself to the DPS, including four years with the Special Operations Group (SRT-5). He was recognized for his “extraordinary strength, determination, and willingness to help others,” both on duty and in his personal life. His health challenges began in July 2025 when what appeared to be heat stroke led doctors to discover a large 6-centimeter brain tumor, diagnosed as grade 4 astrocytoma—an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Even while experiencing multiple surgeries, extensive chemotherapy, and radiation treatments, Shelton’s resolve remained strong as he aimed to spend precious moments with his wife, Raven, and their young children, Ember Joy and Tyler Vance, as reported by Fox San Antonio journalist Ryan Wolf.

Raven remained by Shelton’s side throughout his final days, which he spent peacefully at home, surrounded by family, friends, and his supportive “Tribe 5” team.

Raven shared her sentiments in a touching post after his passing: “It is the greatest privilege and honor to be your wife and to be the one to walk you to the other side. I will tell the kids about you, we will keep going, and we will carry your strength with us every day.”

Outside of his service as a decorated Staff Sergeant, Shelton was an enthusiastic runner and ultramarathoner, a devoted family man who cherished coming home to his wife and children. He even received an honorary black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu during his battle with cancer, highlighting the relentless determination that characterized his life.

The Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA) also paid tribute to Shelton, stating, “Staff Sgt. Shelton dedicated his career to serving and protecting the people of Texas. His commitment to duty, his fellow officers, and the communities he served will not be forgotten.”

Shelton is survived by his wife Raven, daughter Ember Joy, son Tyler Vance, his parents Blain and Stacie, siblings Spencer, Summer, and Ciera, along with an extended family in law enforcement and many loved ones.

Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors in Borger, Texas, are handling the arrangements. Supporters are encouraged to share prayers and messages of love for the Shelton family and the Texas DPS community as they navigate this profound loss.
