Texas Rep. Gonzales staff member Regina Santos-Aviles' death determined to be a suicide

Regina Santos Aviles, a staff member for Texas Congressman Tony Gonzalez, tragically passed away in a fire at her home last month. The Bexar County Coroner’s Office has determined that her death was a case of self-immolation.

Reports indicate she was found with serious burns in her backyard following a disturbance call on the evening of September 13. Emergency services arrived around 9:30 p.m. and she was later airlifted to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, where she unfortunately passed away early the next morning on September 14.

As the local district director for Congressman Gonzalez, her contributions were significant. Gonzalez mentioned in a recent interview that there are still many unknowns regarding the specific circumstances surrounding her death.

“I honestly don’t know for certain what transpired,” he noted, expressing his confusion and concern. He added, “We are waiting for the final report,” which, I think, seems reasonable under the circumstances.

In his statements, Gonzalez emphasized her dedication to the community, requesting people to remember her passion and commitment. He credited her efforts in various local initiatives, including ones focused on school safety and a mental health facility in Uvalde.

Gonzalez reflected on the impact of her loss, saying, “We are devastated by the loss of Regina, who was a valued team member and an exceptional community leader.” Additionally, Uvalde Police Chief Homer Delgado indicated there was no evidence of foul play in the incident.
